Southern Vermont Arts Center
2024 Class Workshop Description:

DRAWING BASICS
A simple, fun approach to give a better understanding of drawing...
June 12, 2024
10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

This is a fun, simple, successful one-day workshop. Whether a refresher or the first art class you have ever taken, it will make sense and help you draw with better understanding. Drawing Basics brings together all the fundamentals you need in order to be more comfortable and confident in your drawing. For students who are primarily painters, this time spent thinking about and practicing drawing is invaluable.

The syllabus is consistent year-to-year, but students are welcome to retake the class. Repeating students hear instruction differently, take away new information and get further in their drawing development when they return.

We will address composition and sketching to get shapes and proportions correct; massing-in of large shapes; perspective for landscape and seascape; the various ellipses on vases, pitchers, bowls and plates for floral and still life subjects; point-of-view; contour line; figure placement and scale; and the checklist of what to look for when troubleshooting.

The entire class is done with pencil in your sketchbook. Douglas will combine presentation, demo and exercises.

Supply list:

Great News! Drawing Basics Supply Kits are now available through the link below. Douglas used to offer kits in class, but demand was too great to keep up with, so this is the better way to get all the correct materials for the workshop!
