Working closely with former Indiana First Lady Judy O’Bannon, 55 Indiana artists painted a complete set of china for the Indiana governor’s residence featuring various Indiana wildflowers. Then they painted an incredible collection of 150 peony bowls for former First Lady Karen Pence’s charitable foundation benefiting the art therapy initiative “Healing with the HeART.” And more recently, the group of 39 members painted 100 dessert plates for the Vice President’s residence featuring state flowers from all 50 states while working with former Indiana First Lady, and United States Second Lady, Karen Pence. For years, the Indiana painters have had a display of their work in the Home and Family Arts Building at the Indiana State Fair in the Fine Arts area. Each year there is an annual IWOCP State China Painting Convention.

INDIANA GOVERNOR’S CHINA In 2001 Phyllis Gladden, then president of the Indiana World Organization of China Painters (IWOCP), implemented a project to paint a set of china as a gift to the state of Indiana. Thirty (seven piece) place settings and thirty serving pieces were painted each with a different Indiana wildflower. The finished china was presented to then First Lady Judy O’Bannon at the IWOCP convention. Later that summer Mrs. O’Bannon hosted a luncheon to recognize all the Indiana artists for this legacy. In April of 2013 Indiana’s First Lady Karen Pence once again invited the Indiana artists to the Governor’s residence for a reception to honor and thank them for their contribution. Mrs. O’Bannon was also present at the event. The following is a list of the artists that lent their talents to make this possible. |

INDIANA’S FIRST LADY’S PEONY BOWLS PAINTING PEONIES FOR THE INDIANA FIRST LADY In 2001 the Indiana World Organization of China Painters presented a set of hand painted china to the Indiana Governor’s residence. This set of china was painted with different Indiana wildflowers. From this gift the 2014 project came to “flower”. Indiana First Lady Karen Pence so loved this set of china that when she decided to hold a fund raiser for the newly formed Indiana First Lady’s Charitable Foundation, she enlisted the talents of the Indiana china painters. The project of painting 150 bowls with the Indiana state flower, the peony, began in October 2013 with a paint-in held at the Art Sanctuary in Martinsville, Indiana. Nearly 40 artists attended the daylong instructional session led by Indiana artist Douglas David. Eighty Indiana WOCP members from throughout the state painted these presentation bowls with their own composition using a color palette chosen by Mrs. Pence and her committee. Each bowl included a specially designed decal “Indiana First Lady’s Luncheon 2014” placed inside the bowl. Each artist signed their artwork on the outside of the bowl as well as their name, club affiliation and their city on the bottom. The project culminated with a public reception at The Art Sanctuary on April 7, 2014 and the formal acceptance of the project by First Lady Karen Pence on April 8. The finale’ came on April 30 when the Indiana First Lady’s Charitable Foundation held its inaugural luncheon at the J. B. Marriott in Indianapolis. Over 600 people were in attendance and saw the bowls displayed as centerpieces on the tables. These works of art were then sold as part of the fund raiser. The foundation presented a check for $100,000 to Riley Children’s Hospital Art Therapy Program. The Indiana artists were thrilled to have porcelain chosen to be showcased as the art form for this important function. This afforded people at the various public receptions and the luncheon to see fine hand painted porcelain and to have the opportunity to meet and talk with the artists who created it. The following people and organizations contributed many hours to make this project successful: Barbara Bougher, Helen Hammond, Gerry Dunkin, Betty Ward, Carolyn Jung, Debbie Queary, Sherry Hoefling, Ellen Wilson-Pruitt, Regina Vandivier, Leanna Sherman, Phyllis Gladden, Helene Reyburn, Tammy Anderson, Frank Gladden, Douglas David, CJ Laster, Maryland China, and the Art Sanctuary.
