Indiana’s First Lady Caroline Harrison was an accomplished china painter in the late 1800s. Many of her original pieces are on display at the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site in Indianapolis. The art of china painting has continued through the years, and the Indiana club has been very active for the past 50 years.

HISTORY OF THE INDIANA WORLD ORGANIZATION OF CHINA PAINTERS (IWOCP) On Sept. 30, 1969 Hoosier China Painters held an all day meeting at Robert Lee Motel in New Albany, IN. Guests included individuals from Illinois and Kentucky as well as Indiana. Cecile Babcock was President of WOCP at the time. Fairy Loftus was President of Hoosier China Painters and she introduced Pauline Salyer the founder of WOCP as the guest speaker. This was the beginning of the Indiana WOCP organization as they received their charter under the name of Indiana Federation of China Painters. The first slate of state officers were installed by Cecile Babcock of WOCP on May 9, 1970 at Lafayette Square Community Room, Indianapolis. Officers included:
The name, Indiana Federation of China Painters, was changed to Indiana World Organization of China Painters (IWOCP) in 1980. The IWOCP was incorporated on Feb. 2, 1980 in Hobart, IN although it had been active for more than a decade prior to incorporation. IWOCP is a state chapter of the WOCP, an organization which has members throughout the world. In addition to the state organization, there are divisional organizations, known as “guilds” throughout the state. In 1998 IWOCP was comprised of 18 guilds with a total of 211 individual members. Twenty five years later, in 2023, IWOCP was comprised of five guilds with a total of 53 individual members. |

The World Organization of China Painters (WOCP) is an international organization comprised of state groups. Indiana is one of the state groups. The world organization holds a biennial convention in odd numbered years and maintains a permanent museum in Oklahoma City. The organization publishes a quarterly magazine The China Painter.
